Extranet

The purpose of an extranet is to function as a service channel for specified stakeholders. This clearly requires more than what is needed from a normal website, especially if we truly want to serve the stakeholders.
Communality and portals
In the case of an extranet, features related to communality may have an important role. Keeping the functionality in mind, portals are often the most logical choice as the application platform for an extranet. With the help of the integrative features of the portal, it is easy to begin adding in communality features, such as wikis and diverse solutions related to conversation or instant messaging, into the extranet.
At its simplest, the extranet can be built on top of wiki functionality but its structure may also be as wide-ranging as featured in the image above.
Uses
As extranets are often used by end customers, partners or students, it is often necessary to attach other systems to them. Possible uses can then include:
- Customer management or managing the features of bought services and products
- Offering support services to the customer
- Purchasing or ordering
- Offering product information or user guidance
- Managing of teaching material
